    Halloween Run

So tomorrow night is the Halloween run for our group.  We haven't done one in a couple of years, I think Brian got a little tired of them.  But he's reinvigorated and excited about ressurecting it.  Bringing it back from the dead you might say.  The whole group will dress up in costumes and Brian will lead us thru a fun little exercise.  It's not a long run (only a bit over 3 miles) and we'll do it slow.

Just as well, we're tapering for the Val Nolasco Half-Marathon on Sunday.

I haven't completely decided what my costume will be and I am still accepting suggestions....

Delta Loses a Gold Medallion Member

On my way back from the conference in Puerto Rico.  As I mentioned before I flew Delta the whole way hoping my medallion status would get me something.   So far I've been stuck in coach on every leg.  Attempting to be proactive I called yesterday to use miles to upgrade to 1st class on the L.A. to HNL leg.  On the phone they said I had seat 3A.  When I got to the airport however they checked me into seat 32B.

They said something about the ticket actually being a Northwest ticket (I booked thru Orbitz) and that they couldn't upgrade it.  But it's a Delta plane and there were a dozen empty seats in 1st class when I got to the counter.  If I had coughed up another $200 I could apparently upgrade.  But I shouldn't have to.  I've flown 65000 miles on their airline in the last 18 months and I'm willing to spend the miles.

If I wanted to get stuck in coach on every leg I could have done this trip a lot cheaper on another airline.  I picked Delta because I thought my Medallion status would get me something.  Apparently it doesn't.  I guess I could understand (though I'm still irritated that the lady on the phone led me to believe I had gotten the upgrade) if First Class was already full.  But they had seats available -- they simply chose not to give me one.

I have 4 trips in the next 6 months and it looks like I'll just go back to flying whomever is cheapest.  For $200 Delta just lost a frequent flyer.  They'd apparently rather fly with empty seats in first than upgrade a Gold Medallion member who was willing to spend the 15000 miles.

    Puerto Rico

Just thought I'd post a few random pictures from Puerto Rico.  Overall a good and productive trip.  The ABA really couldn't have picked a further meeting destination, but the meeting was worthwhile and it was great to see my ABA friends.

Aside from some rain showers on Sunday morning the weather cooperated nicely.  Saturday afternoon was spent strolling the streets of Old San Juan with some friends.

    Let there be pics...

    Rerun....Talking about Visiting Historic Ships

This old entry from last May bears repeating.  Hope you enjoy this "classic" entry.

    Visiting Historic Ships

Let me offer a few tips for people who are planning to visit the USS Missouri or any other historic ship:

    • Wear comfortable shoes. Never fails to amuse me when I see people, usually women, staggering around our ship on platform shoes or heels. Remember that ship decks are often uneven, you may be climbing ladders, walking on gratings or wet surfaces. And there may be a LOT of walking. USS Missouri is nearly 900 feet long and you’re going to climb 38 steps just to get on board.
    • Ladies…don’t wear short skirts unless you intend to reveal yourself to everybody else in the area. You’re going to probably end up climbing a number of ladders some of which may be outdoors in windy conditions. Almost every day we see some young lady who decided to wear her short skirt that day and everybody else gets to find out what she decided to wear under it. Even if modesty isn’t your thing and you don’t really care what folks see please remember that there are a lot of families and young kids on the ship.
    • Fellas – same advice on the skirts. And be a gentleman – first remind your lady before you leave the hotel room that the short skirt, while it does look fabulous on her, is not well advised. If she wears it anyhow…follow her up the ladders, and lead her down so that at least the guy with the view isn’t some drooling teenager she’s never met.
    • Ladies – while you’re wearing shorts instead of skirts…reconsider the low-slung tops too. Most ships are multi-level affairs and you may often be peered down upon, intentionally or inadvertently, by many spectators on higher levels of the ship. While not as big a deal as the short skirt, many times I’ve glanced over the railing only to see far more than I expected.
    • Do a little homework. Your experience will be much better if you take 5 or 10 minutes and read a little bit about the ship you’re going to visit and/or the period of history or part of the world in which it won its fame. While you can show up at the ship without knowing anything about it, you’ll be way ahead if you know a few basics.
    • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. In my experience the crewmembers on historic ships LOVE to answer questions. I spend a fair amount of my time on board just waiting for somebody to ask me something – that’s why we’re there; because we love to share our ship with folks. So ask away!
    • Be respectful of the ship. If the sign says “Authorized Personnel Only” there is probably a reason for it. The space behind that door may be dangerous. Historic ships may look like friendly tourist attractions on the outside but remember that a ship is an inherently dangerous place filled with tight, narrow spaces and sudden, unexpected, drop-offs. Also remember that a historic ship is a place with constant conservation needs. You may accidentally step on planks that are rotting or into the midst of a space being painted.
    • This is a continuation of the previous tip really – keep your wits about you. Whatever ship you’re visiting almost certainly wasn’t designed to be a tourist attraction. Watch out for hazards and obstacles. Be very careful at the railings of the ship – ship’s crewmembers hate to hear loud splashes.
    • Wear sunscreen. A visit to a historic ship may well mean an hour or more out on deck in the sunlight.
    • If you like the ship don’t be ashamed to slip a dollar or five into the donation box. It’s expensive to maintain a historic ship and many of them get no tax dollars and rely entirely upon donations for support.

    ...on the other hand...

I *AM* impressed with the new in-flight entertainment system they had on last night's flight.  Even though I was relegated to coach (again) they had the personal video screens at each seat and (first time I've seen this) some sort of deal with Direct TV (or was it Dish Network?) whereby we could get live TV on the screens.  Many of the basic cable channels (like CNN and ESPN) were included, though only the NBC channels of the broadcast stations.

That was fine with me - I tuned in to find that the Denver/Pittsburgh game was on and only in the first quarter!  Aside from the 10 minute interruption in the 2nd quarter while they rebooted the system (it runs on Linux by the way) it was very nice.  Granted I may have been less entertained if football wasn't on, but still...a nice option.

Now I'm in L.A. until tomorrow - then I return home.

    Delta is not impressing me.

Since I'm a Delta Silver Medallion I try to fly them as often as possible.  The tease of free upgrades (when available) is a powerful draw.  But, perhaps in part to my last minute flight changes, I've yet to get a single upgrade on this trip.  It's leaving me feeling a little "un-special" considering how many miles I've logged on Delta in the last year.  So many miles, in fact, that I expect to get notice in the mail shortly that I've made it to Gold Medallion.

Still...if some of those upgrades don't start coming through I may start giving more emphasis to ticket price (Delta is rarely the cheapest) again.

    Here I go again...

    An evening run

Went for a short run last night around my new neighborhood.  I needed to clear my head and heart and thought maybe some fresh air would help.  I don't know that anything got clear but it was nice to get out and get a good look at the neighborhood and it was a very nice night.  I didn't go too far because A) I was breaking in new shoes and B) I wanted to go get some chinese food afterwards and needed to be back and showered before the restaurant closed.

    • For the most part the houses here are very well kept.  Yards are neatly trimmed, hedges trimmed, everything that's supposed to be green is.
    • There were a few other folks out for an evening stroll or jog as well.
    • There is a lot of new development in this area and a LOT of streets that don't appear on Google Maps yet.  I think I'll be doing a lot of exploring on future runs.

    It's a Bird! It's a Plane! No...it's a bird.

O.K., I'm back in Hong Kong (for at least for an hour) on my way to Seoul and then back to Honolulu.  Looking forward to getting home - thanks to the International Date Line I leave here on Saturday afternoon and arrive in Honolulu on Saturday morning.  I hope it's still October, I'm not really sure at this point.

I like Chinese food but two days of nothing but Chinese food left me craving something a little more western...so here at the Hong Kong airport I have enjoyed (and I use that word a little loosely) a Whopper with Cheese.

Well...time to consider my next flight (and maybe some Ben & Jerry's).

    Home soon...

Where in the world is Ben Schorr?

At the moment...Hong Kong.  In 4 hours...Qingdao, China.  Quick and unexpected business trip has whisked me off to the far east.  So far it's been interesting.  We had some really foul weather yesterday, and I had a lot of work to do, so I didn't venture too far from the hotel.  I'll be back in Hong Kong on Saturday morning, but only to transit the airport on my way to Seoul as part of the ride home.

I'll post a few pics when I have a chance - unfortunately the bad weather means I haven't taken as many photos yet as I'd like.
